CONDX NOT GOOD THIS YEAR. JUST A FEW POINTS. (DL3DXX)Only had a few hours this weekend, so I tried a new challenge - working as a SO4C station - that's Single Op, 4 Contests, all at the same time. It was interesting to learn how to switch logs as I did S&P across the bands. Not much on 20 from AZ here, except W7SA who was my first QSO and 100 bonus points. AZ is just too close for the skip on 20. 40 was much better. Only heard a few stations on 80. Next year I'll try to get on longer after dark. Only running 100 watts and a wire antenna, so 40/80 are best for me anyway.Rig: Flex-3000, 100 watts Ant: 145' Carolina Windom @ 35'73, /Jack de K3FIV Point Arena, CASuch fun K7GGGMy best score in a contest to date, maybe next year I can operate as a mobile. KE7GRLSSB MOBILE ON THE BORDER CNO/NVO & NVO/APH 100W TARHEEL SCREWDRIVER KF7GCL/MI meet my goal for this event, so I guess it was a success. A few things were frustrating. One, the GenLog was using full AZ county abbreviations like AZAPHH, as a mult, which being an in state op, is not counted....which I think it should. Rule change soon? It would make the event more fun for us in state guys to hunt for counties too. Anyway, I had to go back through the log and clean up all of the full "AZXXX" and remove the callsign dupes to make the proper mult count and correct QSO count (making only 1 QSO). Secondly, I find it very frustrating that DX on 15 will not come up on your call to work you. I could scan down the band on 15 and hear DX, not very loud, but workable, calling "CQ" and working their own little pile-ups. But once you set-up on a freq and call "CQAZQP"; forget about it! I would call 10 or 15 minutes at a time on 15 with no entries. Then, out of the blue would pop up a DX! Even stateside contacts were few and far between. I learned that I spent to much time on 15, but how else are you to get DX multis or work a station on a second or third band? This is not unique to AZQP. I have noticed this while participating in several QSO parties as well. Anyway, that being said, I should have about 10 more multis in my log. I only had 2 more then I did last year (70) which was disappointing. It was fun working the other AZ counties. I worked 11 counties in all and swept all 50 states within 10 hours of the event with CO being my last. 20 seemed not good as last year, but proved to be the band of choice with 73% of my activity on it followed by 40 meters at 13%, 80 meters at 9% and 15 meters 5%. Again, if AZ stations could count for mutlt's I would spend more time on 40 and 75 I think tryin' to hunt them down. It was good hearing Dan, N7IA just a few miles from me to pick up the rare Apache and Greenlee! I ran an FT-1000D into a W5GI at about 90 feet from our summer cabin outside Alpine. Fun as always, and look foward to next year. Andy, KK7 Apache County.2ND ARIZONA QSO PARTY N1NN AZ stations always strong here in EM55! N4DTFVery enjoyable contest. Had a lot of fun. Wish the bands were better. Thanks to all the mobiles and thanks to the organizers. Hope to CU next year. Will, NQ2WConditions to Arizona where no so good. Only heard a few stations on 20M VE3GTCNice to see so much AZ activity. See you again next year. Rig was TS830S (100w) and Butternut HF6V vertical. W1ENDDid not have much time and my results show it. No new counties this year. W8KNOQRPp HALF-WATT TUNA TIN XMTR HERE, MY 1ST AZ QSO WITH QRPp! WO4SMade 11 of 15 counties with starting 4 hrs late due to family first. See you next year WA5TRXNice to work AZ friends... YU1PJKJ4KVC, Charles Thanks for the QSO Party. Was my first time in the AZ QSO Party. Had a lot of fun. Band here was bad tho at times 15m was good. N4JF, JerryIt was fun. No activity on 160 or 80. I really enjoyed the AZQP ... first time entry. Wkd W7SA for additional points. WA5SWN, ClarenceI have never been able to work La Paz, Pinal, or Navajo Counties in an AZ QSO Party, and have never worked Santa Cruz County at all! Someday .... |

NF7EI am not sure who came up with the idea of the significant date but that was a GREAT IDEA!!! I had many ask and I got to tell a little about how the (dwarf) PLANET was discovered at Lowell Observatory here in Flagstaff! Many positive comments from those I worked in the party! NICE JOB GUYS!!!!! K7DPSIn celebration of the new multi-multi and power category additions this year we decided to do a M/M QRP entry. Several had never done QRP before and were appropriately impressed with it. Not too concerned with activating Maricopa County but since we operated from a remote location 'away from home' I suppose we are also somehow in the Expedition category. 73, John, WA7NWL. W7SVDPros - We had a great time camping out on the county line. Cons - GenLog truncated all the Tx and Rx exchanges. Do not like this program. K6CSLLots of fun. Time was shared between this and PA QP and also the Oceana DX Contest. N8OOUI was Operating Mobile in Louisville, Ky. ICOM-706/8' steel whip. W0PAN1854 was the year copper was discovered in AZ. W4JHUThanks for sponsoring, organizing, and administering the 2011 Arizona Statehood QSO Party. W9CFI got on Saturday for a little while, but I found it too unpleasant to continue. The people who do all the work to administer a QSO party get to set the rules, and that is as it should be. However, I found the rules got in the way of me having fun. |

Counties activated: 9 (CHS, SCZ, PMA, GHM, GLE, GLA, PNL, NVO, APH)
US/VE Mults: 45
DX Mults: 17 (HA, SP, DL, OK, XE, KP4, PA, G, ON, UA, SM, LY, OM, I, YO, HK, HB9)
Other AZ Counties Wkd: 5 (SCZ, MHV, CNO, MCP, YVP)
It was a long (800 miles), but fun weekend doing "the mobile thing" in the 1st AZ QSO Party. I had originally planned on activating eight counties, but discovered I wasn't too far from PNL at my overnight stay in GLA, so started Sunday morning from there before continuing on my original plan. Of course, that put me a couple of hours behind my original schedule and I ended the contest in GHM on my way home. For me, the fun part was seeing what domestic and DX stations followed me from county to county - sure were some nice signals out of EU. I had planned on some stationary 80M operation from my stopover point but was just too worn out at that point and even 40M didn't sound all that active after 0200Z or so. I know I missed a lot of contacts by being primarily CW - maybe next year I will try some more SSB too.
Thanks to all for the QSOs, especially the "followers" - Frank, WA2VYA, was the champion working me in all 9 counties! Many others caught me in 5 to 7 counties. DX champs were HA8IB, DL3DXX, SP5SA, and OK2EC.
Thanks to Gary, KE7DX and the Catalina Radio Club for sponsoring this fun event!
Equipment: ICOM IC-7000 (100W) - High Sierra Sidekick w/5' whip and TurboTuner - assorted HamSticks on Tri-Mag Mount - DXE Cap Hat and CB whip on Sidekick base section for 80M stationary operation 73 Jim KS7S |

KE7GYQThe AZ QSO party took place last weekend, and it was a great success for the people who participated. I know that I learned a lot and had fun operating. At times I was overwhelmed with traffic. It was the most intense radio experience that I've had. I arrived at Michael's place at 8:30 AM. We operated until Frank came by at 11:00. We must of made about 200 contacts on 20 meter phone. One right after the other. Lots of traffic. When I came back at 5:00 pm, the place was still hopping. Things didn't calm down until 7:00, I finally went home around 9:00. Michael helped me out a lot. He's a good mentor. This was my first contest where I held a frequency and did not operate search and pounce. I had a short script that had different options that I could quickly refer to in order to keep me on track when the traffic got heavy. It was quite the rush. I spoke with Larry, David and Dennis, We all had a great time. Thank you Michael for hosting W7SA and the Arizona QSO Party !! The CQ WW phone contest is coming up at the end of the month October 24, 25 http://www.cqww.com/ Given the good time that we had with the QSO party, I'd like to see our club operate in this contest. I'd like to operate from our shack on campus, and have our beam in order. Perhaps we can discuss this at our next general meeting. I hope that more people can join for this event. Doug K6ESS June, KE7JJU and Ed, K6ESS Aye, laddie!! A good time was had by all. June especially got into the adrenaline rush of pile-ups! Michael wrote a script for her to follow, including "QSL" in <large> letters so we could point to it when appropriate!! She got bumbled up once, told the contact this was her first time on the radio, and the gent on the other end said "Don't worry, I was a new op too, about 55 years ago" and we all laffed!! Needless to say, after working 60+ contacts, she was pooped but high! Michael and I finished out with ~1200 contacts, and lots of fun. Let's do this one again!!! My sentiments exactly! My two hours at the mike were exhausting but a lot of fun. Apparently Mike's station was good and loud in the eastern US, which was the open area at that time. I've run stations before for a while but was never was part of holding a frequency hour after hour -- I don't think the callers were ever less than six deep. Hopefully that activity will also mean visibility for the AZ QSO party.
One example: On Sunday afternoon I cranked up my QRP rig, tuned around, and heard W7SA/K7HIL. I called and called and called but never got through even though we are only a couple of miles apart. 'SA always came back to someone else. Surely QRP isn't that bad; it usually eventually gets through, I thought. Well, due to some changes at the homestead, my rig is in one room and the antenna enters the house in another, joined by some cables through the attic. I only later realized that I had disconnected the antenna end when I left on my EI trip and never reattached it! Apparently you didn't even need an antenna to copy W7SA/K7HIL! Come to think of it, the fillings in my teeth felt a little tingly this weekend...
Looking forward to more joint ops.
73, Frank, N7FG W7LBI will second everyone's comments. I had a great time and I thought that the W7SA station made a lot of contacts the entire time that I was at Mike's, except for about a half hour while we had Pizza. I want to thank Mike and his wife for hosting the W7SA station for the weekend and making me feel comfortable in their home. Thanks to everyone who participated. 73's Larry, W7LB Paul, ND8N ND8N Keyer Stabilization Device
